– Level 2 Significant Drought Declared for Groton –
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has declared a Level 2 – Critical Drought for the Northeast Region, which includes the Town of Groton
Water Department is Easing Outdoor Watering Restrictions
Following the state’s recent improvement from Level 3 – Critical Drought to Level 2 – Significant Drought.
The previous complete ban on non-essential outdoor watering is being lifted for lawns, landscapes, and gardens. In its place, the Town is implementing a light conservation approach that allows irrigation while still encouraging efficient water use.
Effective 8/12/2026, the following guidelines apply until further notice:
- Odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered calendar days; even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered calendar days.
- Allowed hours: 12:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- No watering on Mondays.
- Watering is limited to a maximum of 2 days per week.
The following non-essential outdoor water uses remain prohibited at all times:
- Washing of vehicles
- Washing of driveways, sidewalks, patios, or exterior building surfaces
- Filling of private swimming pools, hot tubs, or decorative fountains
- Similar non-essential outdoor uses
Essential uses (public health and safety, fire protection, livestock, food production, and core commercial operations) remain unrestricted.
Residents are asked to water efficiently, avoid watering during or right after rain when possible, and continue good indoor conservation habits such as promptly fixing leaks. The Water Department will continue monitoring local conditions and state drought declarations and will adjust these measures as needed. All irrigation systems must be equipped with a functioning moisture sensor.
Enforcement: Violations may result in warnings, fines, or other penalties under the Town’s water use restriction bylaws. The Water Department will actively monitor compliance.
